A Comprehensive Guide to the East Bay Area’s Locally Growing Resources

Arbutus unedo, the “strawberry tree,” is a variety of madrone that is native to the Mediterranean region. Strawberry trees produce small bell-shaped flowers that fruit into quarter-sized globe-shaped berries with prickly ridges. Strawberry tree berries are ripe when bright red and have a smooth orange flesh that is sweet and tangy like a cross between a peach and a mango.

The fruit of the strawberry tree is said to be too tender to be shipped. Why would we, if we can pick them for free from local trees?

Using our phones and our brains to navigate a new map app

I am writing this on my cell phone. My posture is curled around this device, my fingers are darting around on a digital rendering of the standard jumbled QWERTY arrangement.

I, and nearly all of my peers, are gazing into artificial light with a fervent fixation, not unlike the insects whose populations are plummeting. Technology’s direct impact on our physiology is incalculable, to say nothing of how the transmission of data is rapidly reorganizing our planet’s resources.

So I am called to ask: what on our screens is worth sculpting our minds, bodies and our lives?

After firing off some…

Early childhood dreams

Communal Architecture

Shower + toilets rooms

The dreams started off as large shower rooms with toilets, without any stall walls.

As I grew older, the shower rooms became mazes, with visible sight of showers and toilets engineered to accommodate varying preferences for privacy. I found myself lost in search of my friendly communal space, in my haste defaulting to more readily accessible private options.

Bedrooms

An enormous bedroom with a squishy floor for any and all to rest on.

As I grew older, the bedrooms became terraced and individually styled. …

Freedom City is organized on a sharing economy app named “Commons,” residents are calling themselves “Commoners”

Collingswood Lane in Freedomville February, 2019

In the wake of sweeping devastation of Hurricane Lucy, residents of “Freedomville” completely rebuilt their infrastructure using a sharing app named “Commons.”

Freedomville residents created a volunteer-based economy using the Commons platform, where users and machines move in concert to produce an abundance of goods with negative CO2 emissions.

Population in Freedomville skyrocketed, as residents of townships throughout the region have all but fled their homes to take part in Freedomville’s utopian paradise.

Freedomville has since been renamed “Freedom City.”

Users of Commons refer to each other as “Commoners.

(Presently, all Commoners are residents of Freedom City.)

What is “Commons?”

“That’s so San Francisco”

I’m sipping a stevia-sweetened carbonated beverage and chatting at a low-key social event in art-loving, tech-focused San Francisco. The walls bear geometric LED panels that blink the rainbow at the rhythm of the ambient dubstep. One-in-three of these techies have brightly colored hair; four-in-five have tweeted about the election results with alternating waves of devastation and hopefulness. This event’s Facebook listing has shown me the names, faces, and mutual friends of all the attendees, even those I’ve never met.

I catch the eye of one of these known-unknowns and take a stab at their first and last names. …
